asparagus, artichoke

The stalk of the asparagus -- peeled, sliced thin and sauted in olive oil, salt and pepper -- is as good as the heart, and much easier to get to. 

Price: $2/bunch asparagus; $3/giant artichoke


rutabaga, cilantro with roots attached, onions and garlic

Some Southeast Asian recipes calls for cilantro, roots and all.  

Price: $1/bunch for cilantro; $1/lb. for rutabaga


sugar snap (top) and snow peas
