Market Report
Santa Monica, Calif.
Wednesday April 12, 2003

The Market: Santa Monica Farmers Market
Santa Monica, Calif.
Arizona & 3rd Street
9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Market-Goer: Mark Thompson, publisher of this Web site

What I Bought:

Purple Tulip Artichoke

These are also known as "eurochokes," according to a sign on the table at the market.

Price: $2/each for long-stemmed choke; $2/basket of five small chokes

Savoy Cabbage and Radicchio

On the drive home from the market, I heard an interview with a chef on the KCRW radio show "Good Food," and he was raving about savoy cabbage, and how the large, relatively loose leaves are ideal for making stuffed cabbage. So with this head of savoy, I tried my hand at stuffed cabbage. The chef was right.  Those large leaves come right off.

Price: $2/head of cabbage; $1.50/head of radicchio

Strawberries, Blood Oranges

Both of these fruits will be at their peak in California markets only for another month or six weeks.  Time to stock up.

Price: $6/3-pack of strawberries; $3/bag of blood oranges
