The Market:
Ocean Park Farmers Market
Santa Monica, Calif.
Ocean Park and Main St.
9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m
(310) 458-8712
Marketgoer: Mark
Thompson
There is a serious
farmers market here in Ocean Park every Sunday until 1 p.m., though
it can get a bit lost amidst the hoopla that overflows the little
park on market days. There is always a music combo and pony ride,
which draw a throng of picnickers, many with strollers, who line up
to buy plates of food from vendors of prepared foods including
crepes, tamales, roasted corn, oysters, grilled sausages and salads.
No doubt to keep peace with neighboring businesses, the market has
set aside part of one aisle for stalls from clothing
boutiques and other stores that are part of the Main Street Merchant
District.
The farmers market is on the back row of the
two-aisle
marketplace, out of the way of the crowds and cacophony. More
than two dozen farmers were on hand today, including some of the
best of the regulars at Santa Monica's flagship Wednesday market,
such as Munak Ranch, which still had an impressive collection of
heirloom tomatoes on display.

What I Bought:
|
|
|
Fuji
Apples (back), Fuyu Persimmons
These are the first persimmons I've seen.
They'll be prevalent in California farmers markets well
into the winter. I buy these tiny apples because I
like to drop them into my daughter's school lunch, knowing
that at five or six bite's worth, they won't go to waste..
Price: $1.50/lb. apples
$2/lb. persimmon

(left to right) Green
Onions, Baby Bok Choy, Gai Lon, Chinese Eggplant
Price: $2.50/lb. eggplant
$1/bunch for onions, bok choy and gai lon

Black Mission Figs
This basket-worth of tiny figs (see
quarter for comparison purposes) would be good for
drying. But I'll probably eat them as is.
Price: $3.50/basket.
