Several inches of snow didn't stop this market from
opening for business the next afternoon in the cozy, warm
confines of the town's historic train station. Only four
vendors had set out their wares on tables shortly after
starting time, and only two of the four seemed to represent
actual, local farms -- one offering meat, the other selling
apples, beets and potatoes from storage bins. One of the other
vendors was selling canned sardines, jars of commercial pasta
sauce and other outlet-store miscellany. Under what rules did
he get into this "farm market," I wondered. There
are farms all around this part of the "garden
state." Since I live a 10 minute drive away, I'm hoping
this market will be a better showcase for some of them with
the weather warms up.
