The Market:
Temple Bar Market
Temple Lane
Dublin, Ireland
Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Marketgoer: Joanne
Seiff
This
small market is in Temple Bar, a trendy Dublin
neighborhood. The market square is enclosed by buildings around
its perimeter. The atmosphere is lively and crowded. It’s a
friendly place with live street music. You can hear the farmers
and salespeople joking with one another as you shop. The
options for purchase here are fantastic. The produce jockeys
for space with fresh eggs and Irish
farm cheeses, prepared meat pies, burritos,
pastries, breads, honey and falafels. The fruits and
vegetables are just as interesting. There are farm stands with
carrots, squash, potatoes and other produce obviously grown in
Ireland. Other stands display produce from all over the European
Union.
| While
some vendors marketed their products as “locally grown and
pressed apple juice” or honey, others made no comment as to
the origin of the organic produce they sold.
Ireland
is proud of its fresh local farm products, but is equally
comfortable with its access to the E.U.’s wide array of
lovely, warm-weather fruits. |

There
is another well-known market in
Dublin, north of the River Liffey, on Moore Street. The Moore Street Market is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It
offers better deals on fruits and vegetables in a less trendy area
of town. Tourists are advised to avoid this area after
dark.

Assorted
produce
I
wanted to try everything, especially the greengage plums,
fresh apple juice, honey, cheese, lamb, and breads and
pastries. As a tourist, I focused on prepared food and
there was plenty of it. At the exchange rate
on Sept. 17 of U.S.$1.21 for a Euro, I paid $7.26 for a
savory crepe with smoked salmon, crème fraiche, dill,
capers, and red onions, and half that price, $3.63, for a
sweet crepe with organic butter, lemon and sugar. A
wholegrain baguette and chausson aux pommes cost just over
$3 each, and a baton au chocolat cost $2.42.

Eggplant, Chilis, Mangoes,
Plums and assorted produce
Produce Prices: Aubergines (eggplants)
$2.20/lb.
Onions $1.38/lb.
Mangoes $3/each
Organic red hot chilis $.36/each
