Market Report
Santa Monica, Calif.
Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005

The Market:
Santa Monica Farmers Market
Arizona Ave. between 1st and 4th St.
Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m
(310) 458-8712

Marketgoer: Mark Thompson

Fall is just around the corner, or so the calendar says. You wouldn't know it from today's sizzling weather in Santa Monica, but there are hints of changing seasons in the produce on the tabletops. Today, there are persimmons, pomegranates, pears and winter squash. But I'm still pulled to the summertime crops.

What I Bought:

Chinese Eggplant, Tomatoes, Lipstick Peppers, Romano Beans

To those in climates where it is fast turning colder, I don't mean to rub it in, but summer is still in full swing here in Southern California. Witness this array of mid-summer crops. Today, the temperature at mid-day in Santa Monica seemed to be over 90 F., making it one of the hotter market visits of the year for me. The super-sweet Lipstick peppers are one harbinger of late summer.

Price: $1/lb. eggplants
$2/lb. Romano beans
$2/lb. tomatoes and peppers

Peaches and Apples

Peaches won't be around for too much longer. And I still haven't made my annual batch of peach chutney. That's one of the main reasons I hustled off to the market today.

Price: $2.25/lb. peaches
$1/lb. apples

Honeydew Melon, Winter Squash, Sugar Nut Melon

Price: $1/lb. melon
$2/lb. squash

Red and Orange Carrots, German Butterball Potatoes

I'll cook these carrots, and the tiny, thin-skinned potatoes, along with the Romano beans I bought today -- by boiling them with a bay leaf and slivered onions, then draining the water and slathering on some butter.

Price: $1.50/lb. potatoes
$2.50/lb. carrots

Assorted Varieties of Figs

There were half a dozen varieties of figs in the large basket from which I selected these to fill up my $3 bucket. The varieties included Black Mission, Red Mission, Brown Turkey and Cadota. I'm not sure what I ended up with, though I seem to have come away with at least four different varieties.

Price: $3/basket
