Market-Goer
: Mark Thompson

This is one of the best Sunday farmers markets in New York City, in my opinion. It stretches down the sidewalk alongside leafy Tompkins Square Park, in the funky East Village neighborhood of lower Manhattan.

I've visited from time to time over the years. Here are some of the reports I've posted on past visits to this market:

March 8, 2009
May 13, 2007
May 14, 2006

What I Bought:

(clockwise from upper left) unknown variety, red kabocha, carnival, acorn and delicata squash

Recipes: Nine things to do with winter squash

Price: $1.50/lb.

(clockwise from upper left) sweet tango and golden russet apples; yali and sekel pears

Recipes: Seven Savory Ways to Use Pears
A Tart, Two Cookies and Three Other Pear Desserts

Price: $1.65/lb. for pears
$2.75/lb. for apples

brussel sprouts and red cippolini onions

Price: $5/lb. for brussel sprouts
$5/lb. for cippolini onions

mini bell peppers and heirloom tomato
There were lots of heirloom tomatoes in the market today, and they looked and tasted -- as I discovered upon getting home and eating the tomato I purchased -- as good as tomatoes at the peak of summer. No wonder. The temperature hasn't yet dipped much below the mid-40s so far this year. Last fall, in contrast, was cold and rainy, and that was reflected in the tomatoes  I purchased in a New York City famers market exactly a year ago to the day, as you'll see in the photo to the right.

weather-beaten tomatoes purchased at the Union Square Greenmarket on Oct. 23, 2010

Price: $6/lb. for peppers
$5/lb. for heirloom tomatoes
