The Fairmount Farmers Market in Philadelphia, nestled up against the old stone walls of the former Eastern State Penitentiary, was stocked with winter greens, squash and root crops, among other things, when I dropped by on Oct. 7, 2013.
There were dozens of a varieties of stone fruit to choose from at the Saturday farmers market in Santa Monica, Calif., when I visited on Saturday, August 24. Tomatoes, of course, were also in their prime, and the late summer onslaught of pepper varieties was underway.
